This is soooooooo damn cool. More information here, here, here, of course here and here, and finally here.
I’m most likely going to use my upcoming holiday to help the project. I hope other developers of the different free desktop environment communities will follow.
great news
This IS certanly good. Happy to see real solutions for desktop colabration arise. :)
This stuff is very interesting from a technological point of view (maybe also as a symbol of GNOME/KDE interop).
From an effort/gain POV i don’t think that whatever wrapper that makes working with bonobo easier won’t be of much use since hardly anybody is writing bonobo components these days.
Please also note that the goffice library contains component embedding functionality which is used between AbiWord and Gnumeric. Maybe it would be worth hyping that a bit since it’s lightweight and simple.
High level components are great but they seem to be symptomatic of the inability of proprietary developers to cooperate on reusing components at a lower level.
The upside of GNOME not having a well developed component model is more effort has been put into creating libraries which can be reused at a much lower level. The importance of frameworks like gstreamer and gdkpixbuf should also be considered.
