RE: Dat er geen gevaar is, lozh

Ik heb gelogen. In ieder geval ben ik een belofte niet nagekomen: ik beloofde een tiental blogpost die als ondertoon zouden hebben dat er geen gevaar is.

De enige twee die daar aan zouden kunnen voldoen waren mijn blog items over dat onze aarde een rechthoekige blok is en die waar ik oproep om te stoppen met NAVO.

Want nu dat onze aarde rechthoekig is, vallen we er aan onze kant toch al niet meer af. En ook wanneer we zouden stoppen met NAVO, dan vernietigen we onze rechthoekige blok ‘de aarde’ toch al niet meer met onze eigen nucleaire wapens!

Dus, moest de mensheid deze twee blog-items volgen en geloven, dan zou ongeveer 99,98% van alle gevaar voor de mensheid verdwijnen.

Maar de toekomst brengt een nieuwe belofte: Lozh en Vranyo. Want nu gaan we eindelijk eens die sociale media aanpakken. We hebben alvast Trump overal verbannen.

Do not assume US still aspires to be a world leader.  Differently put: it is time for a EU army.

She also said: the UK will have to “live with the consequences” of Boris Johnson  ditching Theresa May’s plan to maintain close economic ties with the EU after Brexit.

Answering would a no-deal Brexit be a personal defeat for you? No. It would, of course, be in Britain’s and all EU member states’ interests to achieve an orderly departure. But that can only happen if it is what both sides want.

EU coördinatie bij verspreiden patiënten

COVID-19 spreidt zich uit over de EU-zone met per land telkens een paar dagen of weken verschil in aantal gevallen en stijging in de piek.

We zouden er dus goed aan doen om patiënten te verspreiden over verschillende landen.

Bij zo’n regeling kunnen ook landen die nu een overschot aan bedden hebben voordeel doen. Want wanneer de piek bij hen is, zal elders de piek net beginnen afvlakken.

Bedankt Mark Van Damme. Goed gedaan. Die 60 euro gemeentebelasting zal ik dan maar betalen volgend jaar. De politieke verantwoordelijken moeten niet verwachten nog verkozen te worden.

Iedereen die denkt dat het allemaal onzichtbare wegen zijn: onzin. Kom hier kijken. Het gaat om wandelpaden tussen de natuur en huizen. Ze zijn met gele borden aangegeven. En als je het aan de meeste mensen uit de omgeving hier vraagt is men hier voorstander van. Misschien een paar die hun tuin moeten beschikbaar stellen niet. Maarja.

Ik vermoed dat het ook voor toerisme zorgt. Wat de lokale handelaren waarschijnlijk niet slecht vinden.

I just hacked my Lay Z Spa’s water flow sensor

Yesterday I fixed my Bestway Lay Z Spa. It gave the infamous E02.

Opening up the thing it was. Because in a video the guy explained about the water flow sensor being a magnetic switch I decided to try taking the sensor itself out of the component. Then I tried with a external magnet to get the detached switch to close. The error was gone and I could make the motor run without any water flowing. That’s probably not a great idea if you don’t want to damage anything. So, of course, I didn’t do that for too long.

However. When I reinserted the sensor into the component, and closed the valve myself, the ER02 error did still happen. I figured the magnet that gets pushed to the ceiling of the component was somehow weakened.

Then I noticed a little notch on it. I marked it in a red circle:

I decided to take a flat file and file it off. When I now closed the valve myself, I could just like with the magnet make the motor run without any water flowing.

I reassembled it all. Reattached the device to the bath tube. It all works. Warm water this evening! I hope there will be stars outside.

Honderden vrouwen naar de rechtbank. Christine Mussche fantaseert zich al rijk: driehonderd keer een factuur van een paar duizend Euro! Dat is een villa. Dat zal vast een vruchtgebruik worden. Want haar kuuroord voor misnoegde vrouwen kan nadien nog omgetoverd worden in een sauna- en massagesalon of een heus bedevaartsoord voor het Belgisch feminisme.

Met wat mevrouw de advocaat er waarschijnlijk aan gaat verdienen hadden we er ook een begrotingstekort van een gemiddeld groot dorp mee kunnen oplossen, er een school of een typisch gemeentelijk zwembad mee kunnen bouwen.

Meanwhile: we hebben ook al maanden geen regering. Nobody cares.

Still sticking to my guns, about Syria

I said it before, and I say it again: get those national asses out of your EU heads and start a European army.

How else are you going to tackle Turkey, Syria and the US retreating from it all?

The EU is utterly irrelevant in Syria right now. Because it has no own power projection.

When I said “A European Army”, I meant aircraft carriers. I meant nuclear weapons (yes, indeed). I mean European fighter jets that are superior to the Chinese, American and Russian ones. I meant a European version on DARPA. I mean huge, huge Euro investments. I meant ECB (yes, our central bank) involvement in it all. To print money. Insane amounts of ECB backed Euro money creation to fund this army and the technology behind it.

I mean political EU courage. No small things. Super big, huge and totally insane amounts of investments: a statement to the world: The EU is going to defend itself the coming centuries, and it’s going to project military power.

I doubt it will happen in my lifetime.

Toeristen, geef alstublieft een extra stukje privacy prijs, zodat we U en uw koopgedrag nog meer en beter kunnen tracken bij Thomas Cook.

We hebben de neiging minder flexibel te zijn als het om onze privacy gaat. Maar we zullen niet anders kunnen dan onze privacy voor een stuk opgeven. Voor onze eigen veiligheid, zodat de overheden kunnen screenen wie op welke vlucht zit. Die evolutie zagen we al na de aanslagen van 11 september 2001 in New York.

Hoe juist helpt het dat Thomas Cook weet wie op welke vlucht zal zitten? De veiligheidsdiensten weten dat trouwens nu al. Hoe helpt dit wanneer iemand lang voor om het even welke identiteitscontrole in de vertrekhal een bom laat afgaan? Hoe heeft dat securitytheater na 9/11 trouwens om het even welke aanslag vermeden? Welke bewijzen zijn er dat het geholpen heeft? Welke bewijzen zijn er dat de in extreme zin toegenomen surveillance helpt?

Dit ruikt sterk naar goedkope politieke recuperatie van een stuk menselijke ellende. Jan Dekeyser, CEO van Thomas Cook België, wil U en uw koopgedrag kunnen tracken. Zodat hij veel geld met uw privacy kan verdienen. Nog meer geld. Hij roept daarvoor op nu dat de mensen bang zijn en bereidwillig hun privacy op te geven. Van timing gesproken.

We moeten nu ook van de CEO van Thomas Cook onze Facebook profielen aan hem en zijn marketing afdeling geven. Dat zegt hij letterlijk in zijn opiniestuk:

Dat kan veranderen. Intussen heeft zowat iedereen een smartphone, een Facebook-profiel of een Twitter-account. Het is dus perfect mogelijk om via persoonlijke communicatie de bezorgdheid van de reizigers weg te nemen en hen rechtstreeks te informeren over hoe hun reis verder zal verlopen.

Waarschijnlijk kan je dus binnenkort geen klant meer zijn bij Thomas Cook tenzij je een Facebook profiel hebt waar hij en zijn bedrijf volledige toegang toe hebben. Zullen we de luchthaven nog wel binnenmogen tenzij hij en zijn bedrijven alles over U weten, zodoende hij U en uw koopgedrag volledig in kaart kan brengen?

Wanneer wordt het nu eindelijk eens duidelijk dat geen enkele hoeveelheid surveillance bovenop wat er nu reeds is, aanslagen zal voorkomen? In tegendeel zal de onnodige verdachtmaking onschuldige burgers net kwaad en wantrouwig tegenover hun overheid maken.

Dus neen, Jan Dekeyser CEO van Thomas Cook België, ik geef niet een extra stukje privacy aan U en uw marketing mensen prijs. Onze veiligheidsdiensten weten nu al perfect wie er op welke vlucht zit. Die databases bestaan al.

Geef de actoren verantwoordelijk voor het doorspelen van informatie naar de juiste diensten en mensen een betere opleiding, verhoog getalmatig manschappen en budgetten en werk met de informatie die er al is. M.a.w. doe als ambtenaar in een veiligheidsfunctie uw job.

Maar een Thomas Cook moet echt niet nog meer van onze privacy weten.

Allereerst, na Brussel blijf ik hier bij:

Up next: PADI master diver

A year or so after my PADI rescue, my diving club has convinced me to wake up about twelve times early in the morning on Saturday, to get me trained to become a PADI master diver.

The jokers in my club told me it’s not so hard as PADI Rescue training. The only hard part is Saturday morning. We’ll see, I wonder. heh.

Oh, and to our security services: well done catching those guys from Molenbeek and Vorst. Good job!

Oh, I got invited to NLGG to talk about Tracker in Utrecht tomorrow.

Have you guys stopped debating systemd like a bunch of morons already? Because I’ve been keeping myself away from the debate a bit: the amount of idiot was just too large for my mind.People who know me also know that quite a bit of idiot fits into it.

I remember when I was younger, somewhere in the beginning of the century, that we first debated ORBit-2, then Bonobo, then software foolishly written with it like Evolution, Mono (and the idea of rewriting Evolution in C#. But first we needed a development environment MonoDevelop to write it in – oh the gnomes). XFree86 and then the X.Org fork. Then Scaffolding and Anjuta. Beagle and Tracker (oh the gnomes). Rhythmbox versus Banshee (oh the gnomes). Desktop settings in gconf, then all sorts of gnome services, then having a shared mainloop implementation with Qt.

Then god knows what. Dconf, udev, gio, hal, FS monitoring: a lot of things that were silently but actually often bigger impact changes than systemd is because much much more real code had to be rewritten, not just badly written init.d-scripts. The Linux eco-system has reinvented itself several times without most people having noticed it.

Then finally D-Bus came. And yes, evil Lennart was there too. He was also one of those young guys working on stuff. I think evil evil pulseaudio by that time (thank god Lennart replaced the old utter crap we had with it). You know, working on stuff.

D-Bus’s debate began a bit like systemd’s debate: Everybody had feelings about their own IPC system being better because of this and that (most of which where really bad copies of xmms’s remote control infrastructure). It turned out that KDE got it mostly right with DCOP, so D-Bus copied a lot from it. It also opened a lot of IPC author’s eyes that message based IPC, uniform activation of services, introspection and a uniform way of defining the interface are all goddamned important things. Also other things, like tools for monitoring and debugging plus libraries for all goddamn popular programming environments and most importantly for IPC their mainloops, appeared to be really important. The uniformity between Qt/KDE and Gtk+/GNOME application’s IPC systems was quite a nice thing and a real enabler: suddenly the two worlds’ softwares could talk with each other. Without it, Tracker could not have happened on the N900 and N9. Or how do you think qt/qsparql talks with it?

Nowadays everybody who isn’t insane or has a really, really, really good reason (like awesome latency or something, although kdbus solves that too), and with exception of all Belgian Linux programmers (who for inexplicable reasons all want their own personal IPC – and then endlessly work on bridges to all other Belgian Linux programmer’s IPC systems), won’t write his own IPC system. They’ll just use D-Bus and get it over with (or they initially bridge to D-Bus, and refactor their own code away over time).

But anyway.

The D-Bus debate was among software developers. And sometimes teh morons joined. But they didn’t understand what the heck we where doing. It was easy to just keep the debate mostly technical. Besides, we had some (for them) really difficult to understand stuff to reply like “you have file descriptor passing for that”, “study it and come back”. Those who came back are now all expert D-Bus users (I btw think and/or remember that evil Lennart worked on FD passing in D-Bus).

Good times. Lot’s of debates.

But the systemd debate, not the software, the debate, is only moron.

Recently I’ve seen some people actually looking into it and learning it. And then reporting about what they learned. That’s not really moron of course. But then their blogs get morons in the comments. Morons all over the place.

Why aren’t they on their fantastic *BSD or Devuan or something already?
